Fall is the season of book awards, and this year, one of our own authors has been recognized for her outstanding work. Sharon Mentyka has won a National Outdoor Book Award in the children’s book category for her middle-grade novel Chasing at the Surface. We couldn’t be more proud.
Also known as NOBA, the National Outdoor Book Awards is the outdoor world’s largest and most prestigious book award program, whose purpose is to recognize and encourage outstanding writing and publishing that includes a strong nature theme. Awards are given in ten different categories.
Sharon’s story revolves around 12-year-old Marisa, who’s mother unexpectedly leaves home. While struggling with feelings of abandonment, a pod of orcas become trapped in the inlet near where Marisa lives. Her journey to help the whales find their way home brings her to a new understanding of the relationship between humans and nature, and the complicated nuances of family.
